The South Ayrshire Field of Heroes officially opened on 1st July at Wellington Square, Ayr, bringing together residents, visitors, veterans, cadets, and civic leaders for a programme of remembrance, reflection, and storytelling.

 

 

 

 

Running from 1 to 13 July, the installation marks the 110th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. It features more than 140 striking military silhouettes created by Standing with Giants. In a poignant first, the display also includes silhouettes representing the birds, dogs, and horses that served alongside soldiers during the First World War.

 

Despite challenging weather conditions visitors have continued to arrive steadily, walking among the silhouettes, sharing personal and family stories, and listening to insightful accounts of key events from the Somme campaign, delivered by experts from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

 

 Local historians have played a vital role in bringing the installation to life by sharing stories of individuals with connections to South Ayrshire who lost their lives during the war. Adding further depth, local reenactment specialist Gareth Powell offered a glimpse into the daily experiences of a World War I soldier, helping visitors connect more personally with those who served.

 

On the evening of 1 July, a special Remembrance Service formed a integral part of the opening. Led by Bishop Frank Dougan and Rev David Gemmell, the service brought together the Lord Lieutenant, the Provost, representatives from the Indian High Commission, cadets, ex-service organisations, and members of the wider community. The ceremony provided a dignified and powerful moment of collective remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Musical accompaniment from the Good Vibes Choir, added a further emotional layer to the occasion.

 

 

 

One of the most memorable highlights of the day was a surprise visit from two Clydesdale horses from Blackstone Clydesdales, Cumnock. Their presence served as a poignant reminder of the crucial role horses played during the First World War, adding a powerful visual and emotional dimension to the event.
