The Kilmarnock Branch Royal British Legion Scotland held a Ready Steady Cook event on Saturday 4th July 2026 at Centrestage Kilmarnock  

 

This is a finalisation of several “Cooking with Mark” sessions where Mark Hunter, a former Royal Navy chef, taught Veterans how to cook nutritional meals with very few ingrediencies in a relatively short time. . 

 

The Ready Steady Cook cook off saw around 16 veterans receive a small range of ingredients and they had to cook a meal with these ingredients.  Mark was on hand to help the veterans prepare and present the dishes

The three judges, the former Provost and Veterans Champion of East Ayrshire, Cllr Jim Todd, the Vice Lord Lieutenant William Stafford, and a Director of Centrestage, Steven Gilmour, had an extremely difficult job choosing the winner as the dishes were all of a very high standard that would not have been out of place in a fine dining restaurant. The eventual winner by one point was Garry, who received a small prize.
