Presentation of British Empire Medal – William Wright Glover Campbell – Stewarton

William Campbell was awarded the British Empire Medal in the New Year’s Honours List 2024 for his services to the community of Stewarton. He was presented with the Medal by the Lord-Lieutenant, Sheriff Iona McDonald OBE in St Columba’s Parish Church Stewarton along with family, friends and members of the Boys Brigade
William Campbell joined the Boys Brigade Company at the age of 7 and has continued to support and share the ethos of BB for almost 5 decades. Becoming the first member of his company to be awarded the Queens Badge almost 40 years ago, he went on to be appointed Captain of 1st Stewarton BB, inheriting a cohort of around 30 boys, and today through his efforts, they number over 100.
The selfless attitude that he displays and the commitment to the BB’s are an intrinsic part of his family life. William’s William full-time job in the construction industry is organised to accommodate this commitment. Rising at 4.30am each morning allows him to spend around 2 hours each day on organisational work for the BB. He spends at least 3 nights a week on local BB activities and weekends on organised events. He commits further to the work of East Ayrshire Battalion, the regional branch where he holds the post of secretary.
Willie’s influences have a ripple effect on the wider Stewarton community with activities from coffee mornings to organising deliveries of 'The Review', a community magazine that provides invaluable information for residents on local businesses and service providers with the addition of interesting articles and what's on in the community.
In 2019 the BB worked with St John Scotland Ayrshire and Arran to fund and arrange installation of a defibrillator for Stewarton residents. This life saving equipment is available and accessible at all times for the town. In addition, training of its use was organised for locals and the BBs take responsibility for its on-going maintenance.
William is the perfect ambassador for BB and a role model for those he leads.
