Presentation of British Empire Medal to Mrs Charlotte Weir, Blackwaterfoot, Isle of Arran – Saturday 6th October 2018

An unassuming charity worker from the Isle of Arran, Mrs Charlotte Weir was presented with the British Empire Medal by the Lord- Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran Sheriff Iona McDonald on Saturday 6th October. During the presentation the Lord-Lieutenant was accompanied by Deputy Lieutenant Dr Alastair Grassie, a well-known former GP on the island.
Mrs Weir was awarded the BEM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June for her voluntary work with the Glasgow City Mission, as well as on Arran. During the presentation ceremony at her home in Blackwaterfoot it was remarked that she is the City Mission’s farthest travelled volunteer making a 130-mile round trip every week to Glasgow to help at the Urban Cafe in the city centre.
One of Mrs Weir’s colleagues said “Charlotte has volunteered at Glasgow City Mission, a charity working with people experiencing homelessness, poverty and isolation, for more than 10 years. She faithfully travels to Glasgow from her home in Arran once a week to serve in our Urban Café. There, she spends quality time talking and listening with our guests, preparing and serving food, and helping people to realise they have skills and a purpose in life. Charlotte is a key part of the team that makes this possible and undertakes her volunteering quietly and with great humility and faithfulness.”
