Presentation of British Empire Medal - Mrs Elizabeth Wilson


Mrs Elizabeth Wilson, nee Gordon, originally from Cumnock but now living in Kilwinning was presented with the British Empire Medal by HM Lord- Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, Sheriff Iona McDonald OBE last Sunday.
Mrs Wilson was recently recognised in the Honours List for her lifelong service to the Girl Guides. She has been involved with the Girl Guides for over forty years at all levels and has shown outstanding dedication to the Girl Guide movement.
She joined 1st Netherthird Guide Company when she was 10 and became a Queens Guide in 1966 prior to becoming the Leader of the 1st Lugar group.
Since then she has held many posts including Guide Leader, Ranger Guide Leader, Commissioner at County/ Division and District level, Camp adviser and Scottish Outdoor Activities adviser.(twice)
When she was County Commissioner in 2007 it was decided that the County needed a new outdoor facility for camping and holidays.  Fundraising, led by Mrs Wilson began, and after many years of hard work, the Blair Activity Centre centre finally opened in 2018
Following the presentation Mrs Wilson said “I feel so honoured to receive a British Empire Medal, for a something that I have loved doing for around 46 years. The girls are all so special to me, I love seeing a wee shy 10 year old when she first starts, to the mature young ladies they turn out to be. Girl guiding will always be in my heart.”
The Lord – Lieutenant said “I was delighted to present the BEM to Mrs Wilson and to recognise her commitment and dedication to the Girl Guide movement. I am sure that there are many young people who have great debt of gratitude to Mrs Wilson for everything that she has done on their behalf”
