Presentation of British Empire Medal – Bruce Harris

The Lord – Lieutenant, Sheriff Iona McDonald OBE, recently presented a British Empire Medal on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen to Bruce Harris in recognition of his voluntary service to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme in Cumnock, Ayrshire
Mr Harris has been responsible for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme across the South Ayrshire Council area for over 17 years. In that time his management of the programme has become the blueprint for other authorities in Scotland to follow. He started out as a teacher and enjoyed a successful career before moving to the Council Headquarters to lead the management of the programme across the authority. . He has worked tirelessly at local level to bring in financial support from local companies who have shared his vision for supporting young people who face a barrier to their participation. In the last 17 years, his management and ambition has supported over 12,000 young people to join the scheme..
Following the presentation the Lord – Lieutenant said “Mr Harris is truly one of our unsung heroes who does not seek personal recognition for the work he undertakes on behalf of many of our young people”
