Homecoming Parade, Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland, Ayr, - June 2016

The Lord Lieutenant took the Salute at a recent Homecoming Parade in Ayr as the Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland paraded through Ayr on their return from a recent deployment to Afghanistan. The Regiment, who have strong links to the town, were heavily involved in the training of officers of the Afghan National Army in Kabul.

The Lord Lieutenant was accompanied by the Provost of South Ayrshire, Cllr Helen Moonie, and Major General Euan Loudon during the march past.

The Lord Lieutenant then presented operational medals to four local soldiers who had played a vital role during the tour of duty during a Civic Reception hosted by South Ayrshire Council.

  • Medallists of the Order of the British Empire.
  • Alastair John Chisholm, Organist and Lay Preacher, The Cathedral of the Isles, Millport, Isle of Cumbrae, for services to Music and Culture on the Isle of Cumbrae.
  • M/s Yvonne Jacqueline Morrison, Volunteer Driver, Cancer Support Ayrshire, for services to Cancer Support in Ayrshire.

All of the recipients will receive their awards at special ceremonies later in the year.

The Lord Lieutenant is pleased to announce that a voluntary group, North Ayrshire Athletics Club, based in Saltcoats, and which works in the community to provide a wide range of athletics activities in the area of Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston, has been honoured with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award that a voluntary group can receive in the UK.
