Welcome to the website of the Lieutenancy of Ayrshire and Arran

The Lord-Lieutenant is His Majesty's personal representative in Ayrshire and Arran with the overall duty to uphold the dignity of the Crown. The Lord-Lieutenant carries out a wide range of duties, working closely with voluntary services, benevolent organisations and local businesses. She has particular interests in promoting civic pride and community spirit.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran is Sheriff Iona Sara McDonald OBE. She was appointed to this role by Her Majesty, The Queen in 2017 following the retirement of her predecessor, John Lawrence Duncan, CVO, QPM.

The main duties of the Lord-Lieutenant are to:

  • Arrange visits by members of the Royal family and to escort Royal visitors.
  • Represent the King, including duties with the Armed Forces and presenting certain honours, medals, and awards.
  • Liaise with local units of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army, Royal Air Force and their associated Cadet Forces.
  • Assess nominations for Honours and for the King's Awards, and to encourage nominations for both.
  • Arrange and present messages of congratulations from HM The King to those celebrating their 100th birthday, 105th birthday and every birthday thereafter, or 60th (Diamond) Wedding Anniversary, 65th (Blue Sapphire), 70th (Platinum) and every year thereafter.
